Thomas Muller could have been playing in the red if Manchester United instead that Bayern the latest reports by Bayern Chief Financial officer, Jan-Cristian Dreesen are anything to go by.
The 27-year-old Germany international was subject of a big money move by Jose Mourinho last summer when he arrived, as the Portuguese wanted a big-money signing move to signal a statement of intent. However, Bayern rebuffed all their advances and United signed Paul Pogba instead.
2014 World Cup winner, Muller, who, has long been a transfer target for the English giants, however, Dreesen retorted that Bayern were under no constraint or obligation to sell their youth academy product, despite the magnitude of the amount in question.
In an interview with Sport Bild on Tuesday, he said:
There really was such a thing. A fax came from England. “For us, however, selling Thomas Muller was never discussed. If a player fits here, we would be stupid to go for the short-tem prospect of a record profit only to weaken him.” he added.
A move may still materialize in the nearest future as Muller is currently struggling to fit into Carlo Ancelotti’s favoured 4-3-3 system, and hs only scored just once in the Bundesliga all season.
Since making his debut for the German champions in 2008, he has scored 156 goals. He did score in the Champions League on Wednesday night to put the icing on the cake for his team in a 5-1 hammering of Arsenal.
