Despite finishing top of their group, Arsenal still faced Bayern Munich in the Round of 16 after the German giants finished second to Atletico Madrid.
The Gunners face the Bavarian giants on Wednesday night in the first leg of their first knockout round at The Allianz Arena, a game which Arsenal defender, Shkodran Mustafi believes is very much winnable.
The former Valencia man joined the North London side last summer and has established himself as a part of Arsene Wenger’s first choice centre back pairing alongside the iconic Laurent Koscielny.
The 25-year-old Mustafi had impressed since joining the Londoners and clearly believes his club can knock out their opponent this time around after suffering heartache against them in recent years.
Speaking to Sky Sports Deutschland via the London Evening Standard, Mustafi said:
“We know that Bayern will be a difficult game, but we also know that if we play to our potential we can beat Bayern.
“It’s the first time for me, but I know that Bayern have regularly knocked out Arsenal in recent years. “Like I said, I’m convinced our team can beat Bayern if we play to our potential. It’s up to us, that’s what makes me so positive about the tie.” he added.
Arsenal lost at this stage to Bayern in 2012/13 and 2013/2014 but Bayern are no longer the invincible force they were under Pep Guardiola and Jupp Heynckes with Carlo Ancelotti in charge but the Italian is a master of the Champions League, having lifted the trophy on no less than three occasions.
